How Dentistry Became One Of The Hardest Jobs

If building a practice was so easy everyone would do it.

I heard a story today about a dentist being sued by a recently-fired employee who claimed to have developed anxiety…As a result of getting fired.

I really feel for this doctor. As if it’s not hard enough without having to deal with todays’ entitled workers.

Things like this make dentistry much more difficult than it needs to be. It distracts from what really makes a difference.

Making it even harder to focus is the ever-increasing list of KPIs (and software tools to generate them) which every dentist absolutely-must-have to run their business.

What will you possibly do with all that data?

In most cases nothing at all! And maybe that’s how it should be.

Let me explain. Yesterday I spoke with a dentist friend who has kept his office overhead BELOW 40% for many years running. We recorded an hour-long interview with him for members of our private client group.

SPOILER ALERT: He didn’t achieve <40% overhead (keeping more than a million dollars a year in his pocket) by pinching pennies and watching 1000 KPIs.

He did it by focusing on the basics:

  • Emphasizing same-day production
  • Communicating clear next steps to patients
  • Understanding that time is the enemy of decision-making
  • Never allowing insurance to dictate the treatment plan
  • Training his team to know (and own) their respective roles
  • Marketing for solutions that patients actually care about

Like I said, nothing complicated and not a KPI in sight.

My friend Steve learned the dental business by spending time with dentists who were doing what he wanted to do. Their success did NOT just ‘rub off on him.’ Rather he applied the lessons learned from these mentors inside his practice.

That’s it. He still gets turnover with assistants and hygienists. He still has normal human beings as patients.

What he does uncommonly well is sticking to what works.

Now for the good news.

We are sharing a business operating system (like the one that my friend Steve follows) at our upcoming Conversion & Case Acceptance Masterclass.

Feb 3-4 in Ft Lauderdale FL

Doctors and treatment coordinators, heck anyone who talks to patients, will learn what drives dental consumer behavior.

You will learn the ‘why’ in how people buy, including all the scripts and systems needed to close more high-value, high-gratification cases inside your practice.

Given all that’s going on in the world, it’s time to get back to the basics.

It’s worth noting that registration at our workshops is always limited. Click here for more info and to secure a spot for you and your team.
